Peter Uzelac asked:

The Buffalo Soldiers who were formed about a year after the Civil War ended were dispatched to the frontier American west to join the troops protecting settlers and routes. The Civil War itself caused the Union to call back much of it’s western force to join in the big battles in the east. During the war years this of course made living on the frontier a lot less safe or you could say a bit more dangerous. Living on the frontier during the 1860′s was never really safe but with the large reduction in both cavalry and infantry, the old west was wide open.

The 1860′s in the west were years of many events. For one thing, there was Confederate activity in both Texas and what was then the Territory of New Mexico. battles occurred as far west as near Fort Yuma which is just across the Colorado River in California. There was the famous Battle of Glorietta Pass. This was the famous which is just a few miles east of Santa Fe New Mexico. These battles during the Civil War required Union forces which many times were volunteer state militia or a combination of that and federal troops. Anyway you look at it the troops were spread thin, probably on both sides.

What sometimes goes unrecognized is that African-American’s served on the Union side during the Civil War and served with much distinction. These Union troops were comprised of both freedman living in the north and recently freed or escaped slaves from the south. Regardless of their fine service during the Civil War there was still quite a lot of controversy of whether the African-Americans should serve in a post was army. The end result of the bickering in Congress, which has quite a history of bickering, was that segregated African-American regiments were established in 1866. At that time six segregated regiments were created which were soon consolidated into four black regiments: the 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 24th and 25th Infantry.

After the regiments were organized the Buffalo Soldiers were sent west to fight in the various Indian Wars. There were several wars going on in various parts of the west through the latter decades of the 1800′s. The spanned everything from the Lakota Sioux uprisings in Montana and Wyoming to the Apache battles in the southern New Mexico and Arizona Territories.

Researching the experience of the individual African-American soldier in the old west is quite interesting. Surviving in a hostile environment for anyone is not easy, soldier or not. The Buffalo Soldiers had these same dangers to contend with and at the same time experienced a fair degree of hostility from the local civilian population. This hostility tended to fluctuate depending on geography. The postings in southern areas of the west where there were many ex-Confederate pro southern sympathizers presented a bigger challenge for the Buffalo Soldiers. Texas was a good example of this. The pro-southern San Antonio Texas newspaper often ran highly negative stories about the Buffalo Soldiers when the latter were posted at Forts Davis and Concho in that state. Soldiers in the old west whether white or not experienced a certain amount of disrespect from civilians (many were immigrants from eastern cities) and the Buffalo Soldiers unfortunately experienced that and more.

In regards to the fighting ability of the Buffalo Soldier, it was excellent. Research indicates that the Native Americans feared the Buffalo Soldier in battle and it was these Indians who coined the term “Buffalo Soldier”. The Indians gave them this name as a measure of respect since the buffalo was considered a sacred and honored animal within Indian culture. All records of the Indian Wars report that the Buffalo Soldiers were excellent warriors.

Protecting Our New National Parks

When 1890 arrived, two significant events happened. First, the U.S. Census Bureau announced the official end of the American Frontier. The Indian Wars were considered a thing of the past. The second event however was the Wounded Knee Massacre. This occurred on December 29, 180 on the Lakota Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. It’s both an interesting and sad story involving the Ghost Dance religious practice by many of the Sioux. The army tried to do everything to forbid the practice because it had the underpinnings of possible rebellion. At least that was the thinking of the military. The result of an engagement at Wounded Knee Creek was the death of at least 150 men, women, and children of the Lakota Sioux. Also 51 wounded of which some died of their wounds later Some records say that some 300 died.Twenty-five soldiers also died, and 39 were wounded. Some of those would also die later of their injuries. The Wounded Knee Massacre is reported by most historians as being the last battle of the Indian Wars although it was not a typical battle but more a massacre of captives.

After the Indian Wars were history, the Buffalo Soldiers were quite active in civilian infrastructure matters. This of course was mostly after their participation during the 1898 Spanish-American War where five Medals of Honor were awarded to their regiment.

Their non-war duties were basically to lend a helping hand in the growing west. One such event where the Buffalo Soldiers made a big contribution was during the Great Fires of 1910 in the Idaho and Montana region. The soldiers were dispatched to towns around Wallace Idaho to help evacuate civilians. The soldiers also tried to maintain order in what was a chaotic scene of panicking men, women and children. The Great Fire of 1910 was the largest western wildfire of it’s time and helped usher in regulations for the conservation of the nation’s forests. Even though there had been earlier devastating fires in Hinckley and Peshtigo Minnesota during the last part of the 1800′s, forest fighting methods really hadn’t progressed much. During the fires in 1910, the usual method of trying to contain a wildfire was essentially to dig a trench and hope that the flames didn’t jump over it. It wasn’t very effective in 1910.

After the turn of the century there was a movement toward conservation. One of the goals was to create both more National Parks and more federally protected lands. The Buffalo Soldiers played a large role in helping this to come about. Following is how the soldiers were involved in both policing and building the infrastructure of our early national Parks.

The Buffalo Soldiers who had their beginning in the Union Army of the Civil War left the Presidio in San Francisco each spring on a two week journey through the San Jose area and eastward toward Yosemite, Sequoia and what is now Kings Canyon National Park. All of these parks are in the same general area of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The soldiers serving in California involved eight troops of the 9th Cavalry Regiment and one company of the 24th Infantry Regiment. Since 1891 army regiments had been serving in national parks since but until 1899 the soldiers serving were white

The soldiers carried out a variety of duties. In the area of law enforcement this included stopping poachers who were hunting wild game within park boundaries. Other illegal activities included illegal grazing, stealing timber and mining and mine blasting On the infrastructure side the Buffalo Soldiers served as a construction crew building roads and shelters. As an example, in 1904 soldiers built an arboretum in the southern area of Yosemite. The soldiers did all of this while spending a long time away from their families and while still experiencing various degrees of racism. The army helped protect Yosemite from 1891 to 1913. Beginning in 1913 the park was protected by members of the U.S. Interior Department under the new National Park Service.

The history of our National Parks and Monuments is a story in itself and includes the efforts of people at the turn of the century like Theodore Roosevelt, John Muir and Gifford Pinchot. Without the early involvement of the Buffalo Soldiers policing and building parks such as Yosemite, I hardly believe we would have the beautiful park system we have today.

I think that one of the things that make to Buffalo Soldier story so very interesting is how they came about and their exemplary service during a very racial time in our country’s history.
